How are foreign stock gains taxed in Turkey?
If you are tax resident in Turkey, gains from buying and selling stocks, ETFs and options on foreign exchanges count as a capital gain (değer artışı kazancı) under article 80 (mükerrer) of the Income Tax Law, and are declared on the annual income tax return. The calculation has four steps:
1. Foreign-currency amounts are converted to lira
Purchase and sale amounts are converted at the TCMB foreign-exchange buying rate for each trade's own date. If no rate was published that day (weekend, holiday), the rate of the nearest earlier business day is used.
2. Sales are matched to purchases FIFO
If you bought a stock on different dates at different prices, a sale is matched against the shares you bought first (first in, first out). The gain is the sale proceeds minus the lira cost of the matched shares.
3. Cost is indexed with Yİ-ÜFE if the conditions are met
Under article 81 (mükerrer) of the Income Tax Law, if Yİ-ÜFE rose by at least 10% between purchase and sale, the cost is increased by that rate, which lowers the taxable gain. Below 10%, no indexation applies. For every sale, the tool shows which index values it used and why it decided as it did.
4. The income tax tariff is applied to the year's total gain
Profits and losses within the same year are netted against each other. No exemption amount applies to securities gains. The non-wage income tax tariff is applied to what remains. The 2026 tariff (General Communiqué on Income Tax No. 332):
| Taxable income bracket | Rate |
|---|---|
| Up to 190,000 TL | 15% |
| Up to 400,000 TL: 28,500 TL on the first 190,000 TL, then | 20% |
| Up to 1,000,000 TL: 70,500 TL on the first 400,000 TL, then | 27% |
| Up to 5,300,000 TL: 232,500 TL on the first 1,000,000 TL, then | 35% |
| Above 5,300,000 TL: 1,737,500 TL on the first 5,300,000 TL, then | 40% |
Gains made in 2026 are declared in March 2027; the tax is paid in two instalments, in March and July.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to declare gains from foreign stocks?
Yes. Gains from trading on foreign exchanges are capital gains, and no exemption amount applies. Even if you traded through a Turkish broker such as Midas, a gain on a foreign exchange is declared on the annual income tax return.
Which exchange rate is used?
The TCMB foreign-exchange buying rate for each trade's own date. The tool supports trades in USD, EUR, GBP, CHF and JPY, and updates its rate data daily.
Are my losing trades deducted from my gains?
Losses within a year are offset against gains of the same year. Carrying forward losses from earlier years is outside the scope of this tool.
Are dividends included?
No. The tool calculates trading gains (capital gains) only. Dividends are assessed separately, as income from movable capital.
Which brokers does it work with?
Midas account statements (PDF) are read directly. For trades at other brokers, enter them in the downloadable Excel template and the same calculation applies.
Is my file sent to a server?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser; your file, your trades and your result never leave your device. Cloudflare Web Analytics, which sets no cookies, is used to count visits; it does not include the content of the page.
Is the result my exact tax amount?
No. It is an estimate and does not replace advice from a certified accountant (mali müşavir). The tool shows every step, so you or your accountant can check the result.
